Many know Ramadan to be a month of daily fasting from sunrise to sunset. But Ramadan is more than just a month of fasting—it is a time of spiritual renewal, deep reflection, and profound connection. It is a period of rejuvenation, much like the meaning behind "naya" in Seenaya—which means "new" in Urdu—signifying fresh beginnings. As the co-founder of Seenaya, I find that the essence of Ramadan aligns beautifully with Seenaya's philosophy: a return to purity, mindfulness, and holistic well-being.
For me, Ramadan is a deeply personal journey. It is a time to re-focus on what truly matters and to appreciate the blessings that surround us. The pre-dawn sehri meals, the peaceful moments of prayer, and the joy of breaking fast with loved ones all serve as reminders of gratitude and togetherness.
The benefits of fasting extend beyond spiritual growth—it detoxifies and revitalizes the body, promoting overall well-being. By giving the digestive system a break, the body can focus on removing toxins, leading to a sense of renewal. This process mirrors spiritual purification, reinforcing the deep connection between mind, body, and soul.
Mindfulness is a key aspect of Ramadan, often intertwined with self-care practices like yoga and meditation. Taking care of oneself—whether through prayer, proper nourishment, or skincare—contributes to a balanced and healthy lifestyle. At Seenaya, my daughter Maha and I have always believed that skincare should be a ritual of self-care, rooted in natural ingredients and mindful practices. During Ramadan, fasting can take a toll on the skin due to long hours without water, making hydration and nourishment even more essential.
Health & Skincare Tips for Ramadan
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water between iftar and bedtime to keep your body and skin hydrated. If drinking water first thing at sehri makes you nauseous, try spreading out your intake throughout the night. Depending on your weight and lifestyle, aim for at least 2-3 litres daily. Bonus tip: A glass of water with electrolytes at iftar can give you an immediate energy boost!
- Rest & Movement: Prioritize rest and quick workouts to allow your body and skin to rejuvenate. Light stretching or a short walk can boost energy while fasting. Also, adjust your schedule where possible—try having a light iftar, fitting in a quick workout, then enjoying a full meal later. If you're an early riser, try a pre-sehri workout routine instead!
- Skincare Routine: Use gentle, nourishing skincare products to maintain moisture and radiance. Reduce exfoliation and add an extra layer of hydrating oils to lock in moisture. Check out our Brightening Vitamin C Serum and Clarifying Anti-Blemish Serum for extra hydration.
- Healthy Eating: For sustained energy, opt for complex carbs (oats, whole grains, etc.) and protein (eggs, tofu, etc.) at sehri. At iftar, balance indulgence with 1-2 cheat days a week while making healthier choices on other days.
- Mindful Self-Care: Establish a simple yet effective self-care and skincare regimen. Take a few extra minutes for a nighttime face massage, practice 10 deep breaths before bed, or add a 5-minute meditation to your routine. Be kind to yourself.
As we observe this sacred month, I encourage you to embrace its teachings beyond fasting. Use this time to reconnect—with yourself, your faith, and your loved ones. Prioritize kindness, generosity, and self-care, both inside and out. The spiritual practice of fasting is not just about self-restraint but also about enhancing overall well-being.
Wishing you all a blessed and peaceful Ramadan. May this month bring you renewal, joy, and an abundance of light.
With love & gratitude,
Saman
